Cocopeat

How important is COCOPEAT in the Horticulture?

What is Cocopeat …?

Cocopeat is a great sustainable alternative to many other growing media and has excellent absorption properties so it can hold nutrients very well. Therefore, it needs to maintain a constant chemical, physical and biological properties.  Also, it needs to maintain the percentage of water, air porosity and substrate in a product in accordance to the variation of the different crops.

COIR

The natural fibres which can be extracted from the husk of the coconut regarded as COIR FIBRE, and COIR PITH (COCOPEAT) as the waste material obtained during the extraction process. Until recently the users of these two raw materials (Coir & Coir Pith) are discussed under two separate topics but…having experienced with the new technological developments and marketing strategies taken place in the sectors, now it is not appropriate to consider them as two separate products. Common identification for the above two raw materials have now been given as COIR while the specific characteristics of each raw material remain unchanged.

Why nature – friendly COIR is SUPERIOR …?

One element to be featured in the promotion strategies for all natural growing media is their superior environmental friendliness vis-a –vis synthetics. Professionals and conscious consumers have recognized that the damage to the environment, and the associated costs to the society, from DISPOSING OF SYNTHATIC END PRODUCTS ARE CONSIDERABLY ARE GREATER THAN THOSE ACCRUING FROM BIO DEGREADABLE PRODUCTS, SUCH AS COIR. The superior environmental friendliness is of particular importance as it is expected that waste disposal legislation currently being framed in many consumer countries will, at some future stage, charges the full costs of product disposal to the manufacturer of a product or of its raw material, thereby making COIR of reducing environmental damage.

Advantages

Studies conducted by many organizations on COCOPEAT have confirmed its properties as a soil additive. Being a natural product, it is in demand for export as a growing media. COCOPEAT is completely a homogeneous material composed of millions of capillary micro sponges that absorbs and holds 10 times their own weight in water. This material can be easily recycled back into the environment, thus helping to reduce the high cost for disposal of most of the synthetic kind of materials used for growing.

COIR - is a renewable source

  • Environmentally safe and user-friendly organic material.
  • Biodegradable hence ideal as Soil – less media.
  • Saves water due to high water retention capacity.
  • Adjustable air water ratio and particle distribution.
  • Natural pH of 5.4 – 6.8 with controlled EC Level.

Uses of Cocopeat:

  • For potting mix
  • Green houses
  • Hydroponic growers
  • Nursery & Garden center professionals
  • Seedling nurseries
  • Lawn and golf course constructions
  • Horticulture and Floriculture applications.
  • Home gardening ( indoor & out door ) and for landscaping
